Betrayal

“They came dressed up as friends
came countless times, my enemies”
Odysseus Elytis
Picture
They came as friends countless times
my enemies
with open arms
with words of devotion
to steal familiarity
and trust
They said they wanted the best for me
but when my happiness got ahead of their failure
they made from their vanity
the thing that would hurt me
to steal my joy
and feel that they are reaching me
They always wanted something
I always found it out in the end
when they had already betrayed me
Only then I realised
that under the fake skin
the truth was envy
For something I was
For something the saw on me and wanted it
For something I had
For something they were afraid I might earn
That I might defeat them at the same course
As if we were co-athletes at the same stadium
for an non-existent prize
They tried
but didn’t take anything from me
except from a few feathers
that wanted to wear on them
to look like me
They tried
but they took nothing from me
I lost nothing
I earned
Lost time with them
They only changed me
And from lamb I became wolf
A wolf that thought to bite them
to repay their friendship
But in the end I did nothing
They didn’t deserve it
“You just leave”
I said to myself
and I left them behind
ιn the emptiness they carried
to find them again one day
still empty
Having learnt nothing from their own mistakes
But I had earned
I had learnt
Because they came dressed up as friends
my enemies
and told me they wanted the best for me
But the time always change
from winter to spring
and then to summer
and I have learnt after all
to play right

"Envy is a devastated admiration"
Søren Kierkegaard
